With tax filing just around the corner, it’s helpful to know how much cash you can keep at home without having it taxed. Starting next month, March 1, 2025, it’s time to file income tax returns. If you have a lot of cash at home, you’ll need to report it on your tax return.

How Much Cash Can You Keep at Home?

The answer to this question is pretty simple: There is no legal limit on the amount of cash you can keep at home. So, in principle, you can keep as much money at home as you want.

However, that doesn’t mean that this money is out of the tax authorities’ sight. Any cash you keep at home over a certain amount must be reported on your tax return. No matter where the money comes from, even if you found it on the street.

It’s also helpful to know that the government and tax authorities sometimes monitor the transactions you make with your bank. Therefore, it is strongly recommended not to empty your account and keep cash at home in the hope that the tax authorities will not notice.

While it is difficult for the tax authorities to check how much cash a person has at home, they do keep a close eye on unusual bank account balances and transactions. Therefore, you are also advised to be honest in your tax return.

The threshold for the tax-free amount changes every year. In addition, the tax exemption also depends on your situation. For example, tax partners receive a higher tax benefit than single people.

Cash tax exemption table

2025 exemption per person -€661-euro, tax partners - €1,322 euro

2024 exemption per person €653-euro, tax partners - €1,306 euro
