Gifts in business are an excellent way to express appreciation — and even strengthen relationships. But to ensure it is handled correctly in your accounting and tax filings, some preparation is key.
Important points to consider:
• The gift must be addressed to an existing business contact and serve a business purpose (e.g. “thank you for cooperation 2025”).• In the Netherlands VAT on business gifts can be reclaimed provided the total annual cost per recipient does not exceed €227 excluding VAT.
• Record the expense under a proper accounting category (e.g. “business gifts / relatiegeschenken”) and keep the invoice/receipt with the recipient’s name and the business purpose noted.
Summary:
Use the festive season to reinforce your business relationships — but make sure the gift is treated as a business gesture and correctly reflected in your bookkeeping.
