The Dutch Trade Register (KVK) is exclusively for active businesses. It is not possible to "pause" your registration.

  • Stopping for less than 6 months

    • Your business stays registered. You can pause your work, but you must still file VAT returns (even zero filings).

  • Stopping for more than 6 months

    • You need to deregister your business. If you start again later, you must register a new company with a new KVK and VAT number.

  • No revenue, but still active

    • For example, working on product development or client acquisition? You can stay registered.

    • But: after 1 year of zero VAT filings, the tax authority may cancel your VAT number.

Not sure what applies to you? Always check with KVK or your tax advisor.
